Fashion Futures

For my Design Development & Portfolio module we did a project entitled ‘Fashion Futures’. The brief was to design a collection of clothing for either an existing designer/store or create your own brand and collection, which conform to a ‘slow fashion’ ethos, e.g., designed out of recycled materials.

For my project I researched into all the various routes I could take, and concluded that there wasn’t enough ethical options available for people aged 18-30. I decided to deign a collection for Junky styling, which will be sold in Asos.

I wanted to design the items ‘everlasting’ so they would not go out of fashion, so I used a neutral colour palette and didn’t used predicted trends for my mood board. Instead I used Junky Styling as inspiration, which is a deconstructed style.

I designed my collection in the same style as Junky, however used second hand fabrics, that were unused by fashion houses, instead of deconstructing items into other pieces. This would keep he original factor to the garments, however will still allow for mass production.

At university we have just completed our garment technology module. The brief was to create one/two outfits similar to some items in Rochas S/S 2010 collection. They had to be made from non-woven fabrics and to be decorated in ways appropriate to the fabric and style of the clothing.

Below is the 1st outfit and the images its inspired from. The jacket is made from grey felt which has been dip dyed, and the skirt is made from thick black colbond.

Below is our 2^ed outfit with the images it was inspired from. All the items are made from colbond fabric apart from the flower, which is made from felt.

My favourite part of this outfit is the fully embellished bra with turquoise beads and maroon embroidery thread, which is the focus point of it.

Just came across this jewellery website! I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before. Solanger Azagury-Partridge started it when she set up the company in 1990. Sky-high heels!

The high heels have definitely gone to new heights! I love all the lace up high heels, which are all over the high street shops. I think that statement shoes like these can make a simple outfit into something great. They will not only get your legs in shape, but also make shorter people look taller! What more could you want?

Some people say that it has gone too far and have taken high to hazardous... At what point do high heels become 'too' high???

Banksy- ‘King of the Spray Can’

The anonymous Banksy is one of my favourite artists. He has never shown his face because what he does is illegal. Most of his work is graffiti on walls of building, all over the world. He makes stencils of his work so it is quicker to get it onto walls. A group of people work for him to help stencil his work around cities. His work is mainly based around politics, ethics and culture.

I went to an exhibition of his, which was held in Bristol museum. He got permission off the museum to showcase his work and graffiti and add thing to various other artists work. Here are some images i took from the exhibition.

On this very detailed piece of art work he has added water and a boat off the edge as if the water is flowing out of it.

Colin McDowell

Today at uni I attended a lecture by the famous Colin McDowell!
Colin is one of the best fashion commentators of our time. He is the founder of Fashion fringe (organisation to help your talented young designers), has been the chief fashion writer for the Sunday times and is the author of various fashion related books. Through all his years in the industry he has great and respected points of view. One of the reasons he is so good at his job is because he knows a lot about the making and designing part of fashion, as well as the business part.

Collin defiantly had the whole lecture theatres attention, giving a very entreating view on the industry and various designers. He spoke about a number of things throughout the lecture, giving his opinions and thoughts.
In the 20th century Colin's favourite designers that truly made a difference were Madeleine Vionnet, Cristobal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Armani. He believes that the 50’s is the last period in which the age of fashion could really produce and take in elegance, and was the last period of ‘true’ couture.
Chanel was a good designer, but more of a great activator. She showed that women were not only equal, but also better than men! This created the women’s movement and had effected/changed a lot of things within the 20’s.

In his opinion the current top three designers are Galliano, Prada and Marc Jacobs. Galliano is his favourite designer, never running short of new inspirational ideas! When it comes to Prada he believes that she’s a great designer but part of the reason she is able to come up with new crazy ideas is because she can be brave and strong with your thoughts when you have the money to back it up with.

He says currently there is no strong lead for fashion designers to take on because the generation of fashion is now a lot younger, like there has been in the past. There is also no strong demand for any certain type of clothing. A lot of fashion is no longer made for what is best for fashion, but instead are made more with money in mind.

Colin thinks there defiantly need to be some new great menswear designers! The fact that men are very ‘one way’ in thinking, most males are not experimental, so they want fashion to be easy and risk less, therefore some new designers need to give this to them.

To link all of them together I used the theme of advertisement, so each image is demonstrating a sin while making it into a false advertisement of a product/service, which is related to the sin.

Here is some of my trend research i did for my Comme Des Garcons project, in which i had to design a collection at the end of it.

This is the mood board in which i created for the collection i was going to be designing. As Comme doesnt really follow trends, it is based on a storm that is predicted to happen in Japan which everyone is talking about. I thought this was the kind of thing Rei Kawakubo would make a trend on. However I will link predicted trends that I have researched with this.

Recently I have been researching into Comme des Garcons for my fashion design course at Leeds uni. I think her works intriguing the way it’s always totally unexpected. Many of the collections are as if they have come from a fairy tale world! I love the way she doesn’t like to stick to trends, and if she does incorporate them she will have changed them or be mocking them in some funny interesting way.
